From First Flight to Mach 1.53: NASA's X-59 Arrives at MAX POWER
Max Power.... its coming
Intrigue is mounting for the next generation of X planes for NASA and it continues to grow after the interview for NSF asked about plane 844 the Blackbird SR-71 and NASA Administrator said "it just felt like it needed a cleaning" tongue in cheek which fits with earlier when he teased a picture of what appeared to be a SR-71 in and X post and someone asked about is that a Blackbird and he said are you sure that's a Blackbird. The SR-71 is a one of a long series of X planes and the importance of the these supersonic aircraft funnel technical expertise into both military and aerospace technologies. There is the X-59 which is being flown by NASA as the current supersonic aircraft. Exciting times
The latest X plane that was developed was built and designed by Lockheed Martin after being awarded a 247.5 million dollar contract by NASA to build a supersonic X plane which expanded over time to be estimated to be about 630 million by the time of the first flight. That first flight was in October of 2025 which reached a altitude of 12,000 feet in the air and flew for 67 minutes and reached speeds of a 230 miles per hour which was a good start for a new aircraft in June of 2026 it reached Mach 1.1 then was flown again in June of 2026 reaching Mach 1.4 it has been flown since then and reached its current max of Mach 1.53!
Max Power, according to Issacman, is becoming an aerospace expo not simply an airshow and we will be covering it all at MaxQ we have a plethora of journalists and photojournalists covering media events from November 6th-8th and look forward to information that is gathered and shared over those three days. There is the potential of groundbreaking announcements regarding Moon base plans and to showcase American aerospace and technical prowess. As part of the United States' 250th anniversary it promises to be a exciting three days of events. As part of this event, Issacman has said that the X-59 will be at Max Power as a showpiece and will return to Edwards Air Force Base to continue envelope expansion to get the airframe to its potential.
Supersonic flight matters and it will be incredible to watch what comes out at Max Power and the future is definitely bright and can't wait to see what is announced or see. Stay with MaxQ.app and our socials to see what develops over the next week.
